When the temperature outside finally warms up it is likely, for many of us, that the temperature inside will not. If you are not happy with the temperature of your workplace, you are not alone. According to Marjio Johne’s article, “Too hot? Too cold? Temperature Wars Flare at Work,” “Two-thirds - 67% - of more than 6,000 respondents to a recent Globe and Mail online poll said that people bicker about the temperature in their workplace.” So while you’re getting your spring wardrobe ready, don’t forget to include layering pieces that can easily be taken off or put on.

Luckily, the layering trend is huge. Not only, has it been prevalent on the runways for the last several seasons, but it’s also the best way to stay warm or cool despite your workplace’s temperature. However, make sure you look professional. Don’t rely on the same bulky, unflattering sweater every day and don’t wear outerwear inside. Instead follow these three suggestions Tim Gunn outlines in his Marie Claire article, “Gunn Laws: Office Chic in Cold Conditions.” “[To stay warm at work while looking professional, try]a chic, polished shrunken cardigan; a blazer, the style of which is up to you and your taste and lifestyle (cropped, unstructured, and classic are examples); and scarves, which can be draped, wrapped, or tied in a myriad of ways.” Also, you might want to tell your employer that, according to Johne’s article, “A number of studies suggest that employees uncomfortable with the office temperature may find it harder to perform everyday functions.“

Let SYMS help you stay warm or cool at work with our large selection of layering pieces. We have a Juicy Couture cardigan— retail price $198.00, SYMS price $79.00; a Michael Kors cardigan — retail price $149.00, SYMS price $59.00; or an Anne Klein cardigan — retail price $89.00, SYMS price $39.99. Also, we have Calvin Klein boyfriend blazer— retail price $99.98, SYMS price $59.00; or a Jones New York classic blazer. Finally, we have a variety of scarves at a variety of prices. Try a Missoni Sport scarf — retail price $100.00, SYMS price $59.00; or a Furla scarf— retail price $70.00, SYMS price $59.00; or a Hype scarf — retail price $18.00, SYMS price $9.99.

We’d love to hear how you feel about the temperature in your workplace and if you found a great deal on layering pieces at SYMS; so please tell us about it.

Although it feels like winter is never going to end, spring is right around the corner. To stay on trend this spring think florals, graphic prints and abstract shapes. Whether bright and bold, or subtle and sophisticated, almost anything goes when it comes to prints. In Style Magazine’s article, “How to Wear Prints,” attributes this trend to digital technology. “Whether they’re stamped, woven, hand-painted or silk-screened,… digital technology has given designers the ability to craft exuberant patterns that would have been unthinkable 10 years ago.” But rather than dressing head to toe in print, pair your print with a neutral to really make it pop.

Right now at SYMS we have great deals on designer prints. A few of our gorgeous printed pieces include a long-sleeved BCBG wrap dress — retail price $140.00, SYMS price $79.00; a sleeveless DKNY top — retail price $99.00, SYMS price $14.99; an Anne Klein cardigan — retail price $99.00, SYMS price $39.99; and a Jones New York blouse — retail price $39.99, SYMS price $19.99. We’d love to hear what you think about this trend and if you found a great deal on prints at SYMS; so please tell us about it.

A man’s suit reveals a lot about the man wearing it. It’s a reflection of his personality, taste and confidence. An outdated, ill-fitted suit tells people that the wearer is apathetic, not detail-oriented, and possibly insecure. In contrast a classic, tailored suit suggests that the wearer is enthusiastic, meticulous, and self-assured. The right suit can be the easiest way to influence both your peers’ and your own perception of who you are.

First, you must determine your specific size. At SYMS, our tailors can expertly take your measurements. Or you can take your own measurements by first measuring your chest to determine your jacket size. Use a cloth tape-measure, measure around the shoulder blades, under the armpits and over the chest. Next, measure your waist where you would normally wear your pants. It’s a good idea to keep one finger between you and the tape measure to ensure that the pants fit comfortably. Finally, you’ll need to determine your appropriate pants length. Do this by measuring from the waist of the pant down the outside leg seam to the top of the heel of the shoe.

Your second step is to determine the cut you want for your suit. Suits are cut in a variety of ways: slim cut, single or double breasted, pleated or flat front, etc. The cut you choose should flatter your body type. Generally, a flattering silhouette will have broad shoulders and slim waist to help accentuate the masculine V-shape of a man’s body.

Finally, you need to choose the style. Lapels, buttons, vents and fabric choice all need to be considered. Today, lapels come in all different shapes and sizes. According to Daniel P. Dykes, author of “Men’s Suits: Tailored Trends in 2009 and 2010,” “Since the mid-20th century notched lapels on a suit have been the staple, but as we return towards classic tailoring in 2009 we’ll see a return of the peaked lapel.” So choosing either of these styles will ensure that you have a stylish suit for years to come.

How many buttons do you want your jacket to have? Although this is a matter of personal preference, a two button suit jacket tends to be flattering on most body types. “[Two buttons] conveys height, slims the waist, and fits perfectly within the realm of fashion and classicism,” says, Daniel P. Dykes. When it comes to vents always opt for a suit jacket with two side vents as this visual element will help convey the desirable V shape, mentioned earlier.

Suits should be made from one of three fabrics: wool, cotton or linen. Daniel P. Dykes advises “The fabric you buy your suit in will be one of the biggest factors in the price you pay, but selecting the right fabric will also play a big factor in whether you buy an investment piece or a one season wonder.” A good quality wool suit will not only look great, it will last the longest. While some cotton suits are very fashionable, they are best worn for informal occasions. Lastly, a linen suit is great for hot summer days, but beware of its affinity for wrinkles.

Now is the perfect time to buy a suit at SYMS. During SYMS “We Love Suits Dividend” going on until February 15, take an up to $40.00 off SYMS already low prices on Men’s, Women’s and Children’s suits. And with SYMS’ easy-to-follow size, shape and style charts, buying your perfect suit has never been easier. Did you get an excellent deal on a suit at SYMS? Let us know!
