American Masters : Pete Seeger – The Power of Song

The first authorized film documents the 90-year-old folk musician’s unique story. The man who introduced America to its own folk heritage, Seeger deeply believes in the power of song and is convinced that individuals can make a difference and that music can be a force for social change – but his convictions earned him a powerful enemy: the U.S. government. Musicians ranging from Bob Dylan to the Dixie Chicks – and a remarkable historical archive – tell his story.

Thursday, March 6, 8:00pm – 9:30pm.
A Yiddish World Remembered

The story of Jewish life in the shtetls of Eastern Europe is told by some of the last remaining eyewitnesses – the great-grandmothers and grandfathers from the devastated Yiddish world – whose numbers dwindle every day. Through their words, the cities and shtetls of Eastern Europe come alive again, accompanied by archival films, vintage photographs and traditional klezmer and cantorial music.

Thursday, March 13, 8:00pm – 11:00pm (repeats Sunday, March 16 at 6pm).
The Jewish Americans

A film directed by David Grubin and co-produced by WETA examines Jewish Americans’ history in the United States. Beginning in the 1700’s, Jewish immigrants came to America, struggling to hold onto their faith and culture and facing anti-Semitism even as they became American and participated in building the new nation. Waves of immigration brought German Jews to America – and later, eastern European Jews, who gravitated to the Lower East Side of Manhattan and struggled to adapt while developing their own unique cultural institutions.

Sunday, March 23, 11:00am – 1:00pm.
