In the first part of this prom series, entitled, “2010 Prom Dress Trends” I described all the styles you are likely to see at prom this year. Now I will tell you how to choose a dress that flatters your figure. Although every body is unique, there are six basic shapes: curvy, narrow, petite, round, busty and hippy. Recognizing your body shape is the first step in finding the right style and fit for your body type. Then it’s all about accenting what you like most about your body and camouflaging what you perceive to be your figure flaws.
If you body type is similar to Kim Kardashian, Beyoncé Knowles, Jordin Sparks or America Ferrera then you’re a curvy girl and very lucky. Regardless of your dress size, show off your proportions by shopping for a prom dress that defines your hourglass shape. According to prom2010.com’s article, “Best Prom Dresses for Your Body Type,” skip mixed colors and wild overall patterns as they will only distract from your beautifully proportioned body shape.
If your body type is narrow, like Keira Knightley, Mischa Barton, Cameron Diaz or Hillary Duff prom2010.com suggests, “Go with design details that pump up the volume like gathered fabric, pleating, a ball gown or fish tail skirt.” Generally, details that accentuate your waist and bust line will make you appear curvier than you really are. Also remember that the right undergarments, like a push up bra, will add shape to a narrow figure.
Petite girls like, Eva Longoria, Jessica Simpson, Hayden Panettie and Sarah Jessica Parker should avoid ball gowns and long flowing gowns that tend to overwhelm your shape. Instead, prom2010.com says you should “Add the illusion of height with a short Prom dress with a sassy hemline that hits your knee – or just above.” Dresses that are fitted or have an empire waist will also elongate your figure, especially when worn with a gorgeous high heel.
Girls with a round waist line, like Queen Latifah, Adele or Mo’Nique should lower, raise, or completely eliminate the waistline all together. For example a v-neck dress with an empire waist will create the illusion of a smaller waist, while elongating your figure and drawing attention toward your face. Also, don’t be afraid of wearing a short dress, if you have nice legs.
If you are busty like Jessica Biel, Mel B, Jessica Alba or Giele Bundchen you may want to minimize your bust or accentuate your bust. To draw attention away from your chest, prom2010.com says, choose a dress “with design details on the skirt and hem of your dress.” In contrast, show off your cleavage with a gorgeous, but tasteful v-neck, square, or scoop neckline. Either way, it is important to make sure you have adequate support.
Similar to busty girls, hippy girls like Alicia Keys, Jennifer Lopez or Shakira have to decide whether to accentuate or minimize their bottom half. To accentuate the junk in your trunk pick a prom dress that is tastefully form fitting. To diminish your bottom half, prom2010.com says, “Bring attention up to the bodice that’s beaded, sequined, embroidered or decorated with Prom jewelry like a pretty brooch.” Also go for a fitted top and an a-line skirt.
Whatever dress you choose, remember that size is just a number. Fit matters most. Never buy a dress that’s too tight; you’ll always look your best in a prom gown that skims your body.
